Voices of Educators
In 2023, I conducted a study to understand teachers' experiences working with students with behavioral challenges. The study examined whether teachers were coping (how) or surviving (why). It revealed that most participants struggled to balance work and home life, leading to burnout and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Below, you will find relevant quotes and videos that provide an authentic portrayal of teaching realities.
The Motivation to Become an Educator
Educators pursue a career in education for different reasons. Some have a personal calling, some have long-standing aspirations to become a teacher, while others want to make a positive impact on others' lives.
I wanted to make an impact!
“I became a special education teacher because I wanted to make an impact on those that were not going to be able to fit the mold of what education was defined as.”
Lillian - (Middle school teacher)
I always knew
"I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. I've always played school when I was little with my friends or family members.”
Emily - (High school teacher)
It is personal
"I have two special needs children. I started doing research to learn about their disabilities and how I can help them, and it got me interested in helping more children." Lavender - (High school teacher)
The Challenges
The act of balancing work, family, and personal interests is a challenging task that can leave one feeling overwhelmed. It is imperative to acknowledge this challenge and address it with utmost care to maintain a healthy balance.
Impact on personal life
"It's hard to comprehend something I love so much turning into something that has made me feel so anxious, stressed, depressed, and unable to be present with my fiancé when he gets home from work."
Nora - (Preschool teacher)
Short fuse
"I'm more irritable with my family, in all honesty. When I get home after a long day, I've noticed that I think being very patient at work sometimes has caused me to have a shorter fuse once I get home, especially if there's a rough day"
Aria - (Elementary teacher)
